I always knew I was going to take care of people in some form of medicine and health care. I’m from a long line of craftsmen. Grandfather was a custom cabinet builder. My dad was a welder. Mechanically inclined people, you know, they came up with designs, they figured things out, and they turned it into real life production.
And so dentistry, in a lot of ways, engages all those little things about me. And it really did. It came out to be kind of a dream I didn’t even know I had come through. Basically, you get to take care of people, you get to form a plan in your mind, and you get to see it come to life from your own hands.
And so that really was the moment of enlightenment for me that decided, “Hey, this is really what the fit is.” Educating your patient is anxiety reducing, just in and of itself. It’s just communication. It’s taking the big scary monster that you think is under your bed and turning it into a big bushy green happy guy.
We are proud of the fact that we don’t have to sedate everybody that walks in our door. We’re very proud of it. It makes the patient’s experience more real, more whole, more interactive, and more in control. Their control, not just mine. And I think that goes all together to reduce their anxiety.
